As a result, each component must remain in good working order. There are a few parts that require specialized attention: one of these being your air conditioner’s compressor. Essentially the “heart” of your system, the compressor is what allows you to receive cool air. But how does it work?

The Basics of an Air Conditioner Compressor

The standard central air conditioning system found in most American homes is the split-system, with an indoor unit and a unit outdoors. The outdoor unit is what houses the compressor, and the compressor’s job is to circulate the refrigerant necessary for heat exchange through the coils of both units, while applying energy to the refrigerant.

When electricity causes your air conditioner to work, it’s actually running the compressor, and that’s when your AC does its cooling. Your compressor is powered by a motor which is constructed with a cylinder and piston. The compressor pressurizes gaseous refrigerant which raises the refrigerant’s temperature until it becomes a gas, forcing it through a line leading to the outdoor coil.

Once present in the outdoor coil, the refrigerant releases its heat and condenses back into a liquid, and then it continues its trip to the indoor unit. The refrigerant then evaporates into a gas again and absorbs the heat from inside your home. This cycle continues while your air conditioner is turned on.

Naturally, your air conditioner’s compressor is put under a great deal of strain during the summer. As a result, it will wear down the same way a motor does. Eventually, grime and dust contamination will affect it, leading it to become stuck. This stops the cooling cycle and eventually your compressor must be replaced.
